NVDC Renewal: Costs and Other Details You Need to Know

Summer is already here, and this may well be your last chance to secure that all of your boating documents are in order before setting sail. If that happens to be your case, this article is for you, as we will be talking about the NVDC renewal process and how to take care of it at the last minute.

Introduction to your Certificate of Documentation (CoD) Renewal

Are you the type of person who leaves everything for the last minute? Are you, perhaps, a bit of a scatterbrain when it comes to keeping your papers in order? Were you just busy during the last few months so you could not process your NDVC renewal?

If any of these questions apply to you, you might be in a rush right now, wondering how to renew your Certificate of Documentation (CoD) just on time. However, there may be some differences between the documents you need, depending on the expiring date of your CoD. This article will cover those possibilities, as well as the cost incurred for them.

NVDC Renewal

The first case is simple. You notice that your CoD is about to expire on time and complete the form to renew it. At the moment, recreational boat owners are allowed to renew their Certificate of Documentation for up to 5 years. The price they have to pay for it will vary depending on how many years they are renovating the CoD for.

The process of this renewal can be initiated at any time, although you should keep this in mind:  CODs renewed more than 60 days prior to the expiration date will be issued with a new issue/expiration date, shortening the validity period of the current document. CODs that are renewed 60 days or less from their expiration, will maintain the same expiration month.

However, if your application for a renewal request is received up to 30 days after the expiration day of the CoD, it will be considered ‘late’ and will require an extra payment fine, in addition to any other applicable fee.

Furthermore, if the renewal request is received 31 (or more) days after your CoD is expired, you will need to process a whole different application, called reinstatement.

NVDC Reinstatement

If your CoD has expired more than 31 days ago, then you will need to complete a whole different document. This one can also be obtained from our site. This form is more expensive than the NVDC Renewal and it will take between 2 to 4 weeks to be processed.

Other Documents you May Need

As well as the renewal and the reinstatement, other documents regarding your Certificate of Documentation can be obtained from our sites, such as a CoD certified copy, a CoD replacement (in case you lost it or mutilated it), or a CoD Deletion, if you do not want your details to appear on the US Coast Guard registry anymore, among other.

All of this, and any other documents you may need, can be obtained at the Vessel Documentation Online Center. Just go back to our home page, look for the form you need, fill it out and we will do the rest.
