No documentation validity lasts forever. After the indicated expiration date that figures on the Certificate of Documentation, you must apply for vessel documentation renewal. The procedure is rather simple, as you can find the right form on the website, and filling it is easy as well.
Keep in mind that renewal is valid before the expiration date and within 30-days after expiration. When those 30-days are over, the United States Coast Guard requires you to apply for reinstatement if you want your vessel to be active again. It’s important to point out that this application is only for US Coast Guard documented vessels (it has no use for state-registered vessels).
A Walk Through The Renewal Form
To start right away with your vessel documentation renewal, head to the main page of the US Vessel Documentation Center website and look for the option ‘Renewal’. You can also access the form by clicking on the tab of the same name on the column on the left.
The first information you are required to provide is the vessel’s name and official number. You must then write down your contact information: first and last name, email, and phone number.
The cost for the application is $70.00. You can select additional services you wish to be processed for an additional fee, such as an abstract of title or a certified copy of your Certification of Documentation. If you don’t want to apply and pay for renewal every year, you can choose renewal for a period of up to 5 years. This way you will receive a new year-long certificate each year at your designated address.
After you have decided all the options regarding the application’s final price, certify the checkbox, sign the form, specify the capacity of the person and verify the date on the form is correct. The final step just requires you to bring your credit card information to pay for the renewal process.
