There’s a lot to consider when it comes to US boat documentation, and the more well-informed you are, the better off you’ll be. It can be a bit overwhelming to complete your paperwork and that includes choosing which endorsement to choose. Understanding the endorsement process for your boat is important and this handy guide will tell you everything you need to know to get it done right.
What are Endorsements for US Boat Documentation?
An endorsement is the statement of the purpose for your vessel. By selecting an endorsement, you are announcing what you’ll be doing with your boat. Each endorsement has its own set of regulations that you must follow and making the choice for your boat is a way to let the relevant authorities know what you’ll be doing with it.
Coastwise and Fishery Endorsements
Two of the most common endorsements are coastwise and fishery. The coastwide endorsement is the right choice if you plan to use your boat to transport passengers within United States waters, including the Exclusive Economic Zone. The fishery endorsement is the appropriate option if you’ll be using your vessel to operate a commercial fishing business. Being sure you choose the right endorsement ensures that you can operate your boat for its intended purpose without a lot of hassle, which can include penalties and fees.
Registry Endorsement
This endorsement may seem strange since your boat should already have been registered. This endorsement applies to boats that are being used for foreign trade. That is, any trade operations that occur outside United States waters. If this is your intended purpose with your vessel, be sure you have the correct endorsement, or you could face hefty fines and penalties if you’re caught operating without it.
Recreational Endorsement
Another endorsement you have the option to choose is the recreational endorsement, which is far and wide the most common. You’ll choose this one if you plan to simply use your boat for entertainment or fun. If your only goal is to spend time out on the water with your friends and family, this is the endorsement for you. Keep in mind that this endorsement does not allow for any kind of commercial use for the vessel and you cannot use it to earn money by transporting passengers or fishing. Any boat can be used for recreational purposes, but recreational boats cannot be used for commercial purposes without the additional endorsements.
Multiple Endorsements
If you plan to use your boat for more than one purpose, you may need to have more than one endorsement, so keep this in mind. It’s never a good idea to be caught out on the water without the proper endorsement. For example, if you want to conduct foreign trade and you are a commercial fisherman, you may need both endorsements.
